Corolla or a Civic, they are reliable and fuel efficient.

Ford Escort, been around forever, lots of parts. I'd add Ford Contour in there if you get the Zetec-4 engine version .The Duratec V6 is too crowded in the engine bay, making maintainence difficult. If you insist on something newer, try the Focus, though the first few years ain't that great.

Another thing to watch out for... Volvos. Yes, I know they're great family cars, but you can pick up a 10-yr old Volvo for $5K or so easily, and they are great daily drivers with decent mileage. If treat with care, they last 250K miles easily. And they got great safety ratings.

Another cheap but reliable... Nissan Sentra. Been around forever as well, plenty of parts around.
