Does any one know the name of the French General who surrendered to General Giap in Dien Bien Phu, 1954 ?

His full name was Christian Marie Ferdinand de la Croix de Castries . I guess Gen. de Castries for short.  I checked this in one of the most exciting books I have ever read : The Siege of Dien Bien Phu : h**l In A Very Small Place by Bernard Fall.  The author was a reporter who covered WW2, the French - Vietnam War and the American - Vietnam war where he was killed.

I lived in Viet Nam for two years and travelled to Dien Bien Phu after reading Fall's book.  It was one of the best trips I ever made.  You could see why Fall called it h**l In a Very Small Place.

Dien Bien Phu was so important because victory here meant winning the entire war and few battles in history have done that.  It joined Gettysburg and Stalingrad in this category
