Does any one know what the inside of a Mormon or LDS Church looks like?

I'm doing a report on Mormon religion and need to know about the church itself, I was to visit one a few hours away but other things kept me from going. Some details like windows - stained glass or not, is there a sanctuary, baptism area and any thing else that may be different about Churches.

Thanks in advance to all!

  1. Wow, a few HOURS? I don't know that there are very many places in the US....well, unless you live in the Australian outback or something, I suppose.

A chapel is a plain building. The worship area (chapel) is rather plain. Three columns of pews, a lectern, probably seats up front for the choir, and local leaders, a piano and probably an organ, that's about it. We keep our worship area clear so there are no distractions from the speakers.

There are usually pictures on the walls of the halls and some rooms like the Relief Society room, the Primary, and the Young Women have pianos. Otherwise, there are chairs, a table, and chalkboards and that's about it. Restrooms, a baptismal font, the usual.

Now, if you are talking about the temple, you can see it if you want, there are sites that show the rooms in the temple. Or books you can get at some temple visitor's centers.

  2. A Mormon chapel is quite modern.  It has a meeting room for Sacrament Meeting, a font for full immersion baptisms, it doesn't usually have stained glass windows, there are classrooms for lessons (not just spiritual, sometimes craft, etc.) and a gymnasium and sometimes a stage.

  3. It looks pretty much like most churches except catholic. They have a sanctuary. The one I saw didn't have a baptistery

  4. No stained windows in the ones I've been to. No sanctuary. there are baptismal font in most they not out in the open. the are keeped hidden until a baptism is being preformed

But other than that it looks like a church!

  5. Just incase you want the temples as well here is a youtube of the Nauvoo temple at night, the inside of a temple,

All temples have the angel Moroni on the top.

As for the churches they have the meeting place (sancutary) where one women stands up to lead everyoenin a hymn, no choir, the Bishopbrick sits up on the top of the sanctuary. There is sunday school rooms, relief-society and priesthood men's room and sunday school room, and Mursery rooms. From memory, the stake house have the baptism rooms. No stain glass or crosses.

  6. Chapels vary from location to location.  Depending on when they were built, who they were built by, and if they're rented/owned makes a difference in the various appearances.   Older chapel buildings or buildings we purchased sometimes have stained glass, but typically new buildings do not.

Here are some pictures of what we call the Sacrament Hall (what you call the Sanctuary, though we don't have an altar):

The rest of the rooms tend to look like classrooms with folding chairs, a piano, and various faith related artwork.  These are used for Sunday school, men's meetings, women's meetings, and children's meetings.

Our baptism fonts are usuallly behind a curtain and accessible from the bathrooms when someone is being baptized.  The font simply looks like a big bathtub sunk into the floor with steps on either side leading up to the men and women's bathrooms.  There is often a mirror angled above the font so that people gathered around can see better into the font.  It is deep enough for two fully grown men to stand in and have water up to their waists (as we practice baptism by immersion).  Some chapels do not have baptism fonts.

Buildings also usually have a cultural hall, sometimes with a stage and basketball court, in the center for non-Sunday activities.
