I'm getting into barrel racing and I don't know if I need some thing special or just what I have now - a pleasure saddle, and a regular bridle. Please help!

  1. What you have is fine now. I would consider knee and shin guards for your barrel leg. The main thing is your horse and his or her training. It's a great sport and I wish you the best. When you start you will find that everyone in the sport is very willing to help you.

  2. Welcome to a great sport! A barrel saddle is nice because it "locks" you in your seat through the fast turns but a regular saddle will do fine while you are learning.Take it slow and learn good habits.Add speed later as you and your horse are ready.Hopefully you have a good sound horse for this physically demanding sport. I recommend knot reins for correct hand placement in your turns. I also like to use leg protection on my horses; either polo wraps or sports medicine boots with bell boots.A lot more people are wearing helmuts these days also.Good luck, be safe and have fun!

  3. Hello my name is Shelby and i am a  proffessional barrelracer i have been doing it 4 years, n  e wayz yeah some ppl use tigh downs if there horse likes to throw there head up and u need a horse that knows the barrels not just n e horse, also yeah u need a barrelracing saddle, so you can brace yourself. How do u know it is a barrelracing saddle? you can usually tell by the longer saddle horn and high back for bracing. also make sure you saddle is tight, you dont want it to roll off. and dont practice 2 much or your horse will get bored and shoulder the barrel which will cause u a 5 point pentally. i like to use a whip b cause some horses are lazy, but if you perfer spurs go ahead but b carfull with spurs b cuz even if your barrley touching the horse with it it can mess up the entire run i would perfure a whip. also make sure you know what your check point is thats always important and i also train barrelhores so if you would like me 2 train a horse 4 u email me. if you have n e questions im on my myspace ALOT!! www.myspace.com/shelbybrowder2323
