  1. New York Passenger List 1820-1957 shows most Tolano listed their ethnicity as Italian.

There is no such thing as a coat of arms for a surname. There are peddlers on the internet, at airports, in shopping malls, in magazines selling them.  Any one of us on this board can give you links to those peddlers on the internet.

Frequently what they have are valid coats of arms, but what isn't valid is they make it appear that they belong to everyone with a particular surname and they don't.   They were and are granted to individual men and are passed down to the direct legitimate male line of descent.  In many cases, there were more than one man with the same surname, not all related, granted a coat of arms, all different.  No one peddler who sells them will have all of them.  The only time they will have more than one is if more than one person with the same surname from different national origins were granted one.  Then they will have one of each and there might have been several of each.

Under sources, I am furnishing you links to a) info re Italian heraldry b)from the British College of Arms(they grant coats of arms) c) from the most prestigious genealogical organization in the U.S., The National Genealogical Soceity.

If this is a school project, please print the links off and give them to your teacher.  Also feel free to print off what I have posted here and give it to him/her.  I apologize if you aren't a student.  It just happens that we get a lot of students given assignments like this.
