  1. Ok first of all thats really cool that your going scuba diving, getting to the point you can look it up on google www.google.com and look up scuba diving supply stores.

  2. I recommend you start by going to www.padi.com , click on "Start Diving" and then click the "Contact your local PADI Dive Center or Resort" link at the bottom of the page.  That will take you to a search page where you can enter where you live.  The search page will give you all the PADI dive centers in your area - they'll all be good quality and reputable SCUBA dive suppliers.

BTW - please do *not* order life support dive gear (like your regulator) online.

    ****Added info

A certain online company has been named in other answers here.  At our local dive shop, this outfit has been specifically named on bulletins from Aqua Lung and other suppliers as **Not An Approved Vendor** and the equipment warranty will not be honored if equipment is bought from them.

Just for the halibut, I did call them once.  They talk a good line, but required annual maintenance requires sending one's gear to them - a dicey proposition in my book.  I'd much rather deal with a local shop.

  3. I would certainly tour the local dive shops in your area. Most dive shops have about the same prices (read: high) so if you're going to spend a bunch of money on dive gear try and find a place where the people are cool.

Walk into each dive shop and try and engage the folks behind the counter. Do they seem helpful? Knowledgeable? Ask to speak to an instructor... do you get along with them?

I've shopped at some places with pretty high prices for better service and fun people.

If you can't find a dive shop locally you like check out these online shops:

http://www.leisurepro.com/ - Fast and cheap shipping. Great prices.

http://www.leisurepro.com/ - the nicest people. They're always happy to talk on the phone with you before you buy online.

http://www.scubaboard.com/ - Great forum to ask questions about every aspect of diving.

    Dive safe!
