How are you going to improve hops with lab equipment?  What are you going to do to the poor hops to make them better?

If you want to extract the hops and use the extract in beer - the beer already extracts the desirable flavors from the hops as it ferments.  Doing a separate extraction (with "chemicals", or even just plain ethanol) may extract flavors you don't want.  (And there's the problem of getting rid of the organic solvents - many of them quite poisonous.)  Glassware to do this is pretty simple/cheap - look for stuff on "steam distillation".  Many sites sell parts and kits for high school science classrooms, perhaps those would be cheaper than "scientific" stores.

If you want to genetically modify hop plants to produce better hops, then that's a totally separate kind of lab equipment... and much less likely to be cheap, let alone free.
