  1. Check with your state bar association.  Most states have a Lawyer Referral Service that will help you find an attorney.  You can find a link to your state's bar association at the ABA Legal Help page at http://www.abanet.org.

If your state does not have a Lawyer Referral Service, you can use the Martindale-Hubbell directory at www.lawyers.com.

  2. Define "cheap."

What I can tell you is this... if you're living at or near the poverty level, you may be able to get some assistance through a Legal Aid Clinic.

However, most are SWAMPED, Prepare to wait in line, and because they're so busy and understaffed, you may have as many issues trying to stay in touch with them and on top of your case as you do with your mortgage company.

If you make much more than subsistence-level wages, the Legal Clinics will tell you that you make too much money to qualify for assistance.

MOST attorneys who practice foreclosure law are working for the mortgage companies, not borrowers. Why? Because the banks have lots of money, and they're a source of repeat business. Lots of it.

Depending on the nature of your problem, it may be difficult to find competent counsel, at a price that you can afford.

You didn't describe what's wrong, but if you're facing foreclosure, you may want to get some information at my website:
