Does any ones pony get jumpy and excited before a hunt or a cross country course, how should i calm him down?

My pony, is very very excitable, and can't wait to getting going he is fine if i take him out alone, but as soon as any other pony comes along, he gets really over excited and jittery we went to a point to point the other day, we won it but it wasn't a good start because he is so excitable. What can i do to calm him down.

Lunging is really good if there is room to do so. (aka, if you have the time and space before its your turn) also, I have heard that some herbs and alternative therapies help. (if you believe in that stuff) I dont know if that helps you at all, but its always helped me.
