I live in northern California and I heard a Rattle Snake on the hill by our house. I have never been wrong before about that sound, But I can't see one.

My roommate says Beetles sound like that and she thinks it is a Beetle.

So could it be a Beetle OR ANY OTHER creature? I have never heard of anything making the same sound as a Rattle Snake.

  1. Any snake that is nervous will vibrate its tail. If the snake is in dry leaves, you hear much the same sound as a rattlesnake makes.

  2. Cicadas do sound similar.  There are also plants called "rattlesnake weed" that sound like a rattlesnake when blown in the wind.  It could have possibly been either a rattlesnake or a cicada.

  3. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean its not there. They are marvelous hiders. Don't go looking for one. You're on a short path to the hospital.

And as far as I know, there aren't any other creatures that sound distinctly like a rattler. Beatles can make a shaking sound, but a rattle is pretty clear.

  4. There is the cicada which makes a buzzing sound, does it sound like this?

If not, I would say what you are hearing is likely a rattler that's been upset by something.
