........that we ought to look at other country's recycling methods?

In Germany for example, a deposit is charged on beer bottles. Aldi operate a system whereby, if you return empty plastic bottles (bought at their shops), you receive money off your shopping.

Should the UK stop threatening people with extra waste disposal charges, and instead encourage recycling?

  1. A lot of countries, Canada, USA etc charge 10 cents for beer bottles and you get the money when you return the bottle.

It is wise to look at what other countries are doing but at the heart of it people have to WANT to recycle.

If they don't want to Recycle they won't, regardless of the benefits

  2. The whole planet should be doing this.  Maybe the useless UN could step in.

    Recycling is the first step.

    Reduction is the best.

The cost of packaging lead covered baubles form China has to end, I don't want a landfill any where near me.

  3. Yes I do agree with you.

  4. Yes,we have to in my origin country as I remembered when I was a little girl our people are always collected the bottles to sell it and to earned an extra money which is good idea. After that took it in the recycle place so everything will not wasting.

  5. We have a deposit return on cans/bottles here in the State of Michigan.  You get 10 cents for every bottle/can you return (the groceries stores have machines you run the cans through).  Keeps the streets cleans and people in dire need of gas money going!

  6. Yes, because recycling is another chore to add to the already long list of housewife related tasks I complete everyday.  A little incentive might persuade alot more UK residents to make time to recycle.

  7. I used to get 2p for taking my Brown ale bottles back but the government stopped it. now I just smash them against  walls, its more fun..Im down 96p a week.but at least I have fun.

  8. Perhaps we should turn the clock back 50 years, there was not so much wastage then.

People didn't have the money to waste like they seem to these days, and items were reused, mended or passed on to friends or relatives.

Too much perfectly usable stuff gets dumped, when it could be reused, sold or even swapped for something you do want.

The flogit and swapit group is a great FREE  method of swapping or selling your unwanted items on-line..

Unlike eBay, all the Flogit and Swapit groups are small and local so you do not create a large carbon footprint driving many miles to pick items up.

  9. When I lived in Canada I used to get my cigarette money (I was 15 and had my pocket money stopped when my mum found out I was smoking) by collecting bottles and returning them for the deposit - the 2L bottles got me 30 cents! A lot of homeless people used collecting bottles as a means of getting money as well.

  10. we use to pinch beer bottles from the back of the pub then take them back for a threepenny bit.

  12. They do something similar in Michigan & Iowa in the US, there are other staes but I have lived there and know how they work.  Iowa is a 5 cent deposit & Michigan is 10 cent, you can take them to a reclamation center or the customer service desk where you shop for groceries and you can get your money back.  You can use this money for anything there were several times this was how I got to work.  The down side tot his is the filth & germs associated with the bottles and cans.  They are really gross.  I think it would be a good thing for you to at least put out there to your councils to consider.
