  1. A liner is merely a thin plastic sheeting that needs to be carefully maintained. The only thing you save is the delay and mess of construction. Cost is about $500 for just a tub and $1000 for tub/shower unit. I believe the people who do this work are called "bath fitters". You could have the tub refinished for about the same cost and it is a better option.

  2. I tried googling bathtub liner for you and all that appears is shower curtain liners. There are however fiberglass repair kits for bathtubs on line. Prices varied.

How much does it cost to refinish your existing bathtub?

Well first of all how long do you want it to last? Refinishing costs about $400 now and lasts about 3 years now, but some start peeling, bubbling or chipping within 3 - 5 months. The EPA no longer allows the old glaze they used before 1999.

My Dad had his tub refinished by Gnu-Tub and after two or three weeks the paint was bubbling around the drain. It is now 5 years and the finish is all worn away again. You are not allowed to use a bath mat or soap with oil in it. You cannot set anything on the rim of the tub. You cannot drop anything - it will chip, or use super hot water because the contrast of the cold of the metal tub and the hot water makes the paint bubble too.

New cast iron or steel tubs only last 8 to 10 years now because the new finishes are thin, not like the old tubs the guy talked about that were thick (applied by hand) and baked on. New tubs are sprayed by computer and they make them thin on purpose now - planned obsolescence.

It is never necessary to replace a bathtub nowadays except for fiberglass. The old tub acts as support for a tub liner. You basically seal them in acrylic and they now last 30 to 45 years. It is best to get a professional like Bath Fitter because they have computer software to measure your tub and make a custom liner to fit. Ill-fitting liners can crack so you need the pros on this one - they have molds for almost all old tubs.
