Does anybody have a good out of the ordinary volunteer idea?

I'm looking for something fun with animals but not normal like everybody volunteers at animal shelters and vets but i want to do something different. I want to volunteer to help the animals but also to see if a career with animals is right for me. I live in buffalo, ny

I volunteer with an animal adoption agency (we're foster based, so no shelter work required), and you'd be surprised at the need for volunteers to do things OTHER than work with animals.

Behind the scenes, we constantly need people to write grant letters, make follow-up phone calls, organize fundraisers, keep books, manage newsletters, send emails, communicate with the public, and other oddball tasks. Also, a local bingo hall pays the organization to send a few volunteers once a month to help out with bingo... it's fun and helps raise money for the dogs!

These tasks aren't just related to animal-based organizations, most non-profit organizations constantly need help with them.

But if you would like to help with the animals, we (and other rescue organizations) always need new foster homes. Also, every weekend, and sometimes more often than that, there are transports all across the country trying to get dogs and cats from high-kill shelters to foster homes or rescue organizations. If you're willing to lend your vehicle and a tank of gas, participating in that is extremely rewarding and you get to meet tons of new people.

I had a student who worked at a bird sanctuary doing physiological rehab for abused birds.  I have a friend is involved in capturing, neutering, vaccinating, and releasing stray cats.  You could also work for a charity that trains service animals (like see-eye-dogs).
