  1. I work in an embassy, and there is an intern program for students during the summer. There are not very many slots, and the competition is usually pretty stiff. If you choose an embassy that is not particularly popular (i.e., NOT Paris, Brussels, Sydney) such as Astana, which only had one applicant last year, you have a better chance of getting the position. By the way, you will need to pay your way and live in temporary housing all summer (you'll likely be moved from apartment to apartment). Sometimes the position is paid, other times it is not. But it is ALWAYS a great learning experience and a lot of fun!

Hint: If you have your sights set on a particular embassy, go to its site, find out who the "management officer" or the "general services officer" is (one of the principal officers), and send them an e-mail letting them know that you are intending to apply. Then your resume won't be anonymous.

I wish you the best of luck!

  2. Go to Georgetown or Harvard/Yale/Princeton/  and study Foriegn Service. Or get a Masters degree in something and take the FSO exam which is once a year. And it is like HARD to pass and if you do there is only like 1,000,000 people ahead of you. Unless you want to be the Embassy plumber or electrician. And in that case have some kind of technical skills, and if it isn't a local hire position which it probably is. Knowing someone always helps, like the President of the United States, he can nominate you .  There are alot of ways, you could work civil service at the State Department and then transfer once you finished one of the D.C. schools. I dont know don't hate I am just speaking the truth. www.state.gov

will tell you something, but believe me I know. I have taken the test before and it sucks.
