  1. Dear Andrew

Access to your records would depend greatly upon where the birth and adoption took place.

The USA is the only place in the world where these records are still kept sealed and secret, although a handful of States  have changed the laws on this - the rest are stuck in a time-warp of shame and secrecy.

Most of the rest of the world recognizes the right of the Adoptee to access their records should they so choose

If you can amend your answer to indicate where you are looking, somebody will be able to help.

If you are from the USA, don't lose hope.  I found my true identity this year after a 20 year search - hopefully it won't take you that long though!

ETA:   In the UK?  Easy Peasy - go get your records.   All the info you need is here:

  2. Hiya Andrew,

Adoption records in the UK are open for adoptees.

You should be able to apply through the government for all your adoption records.

I'm unaware of the exact procedures - but start here -

    - and hopefully Heather will come back with more details - she is a searching guru!!!

Best of luck with the search.

  3. You don't say where you were born.  If you were born in the US, you can contact the agency that handled your adoption and request your "non-identifying" information.  Be sure to let the agency know that you're open to reunion; leave a letter authorizing the release of your information or find out if they have a form for this purpose.

Google your state's adoption info site and find out if your state has a reunion registry.  For example, here's California's web site regarding adoption:

    http://www.childsworld.ca.gov/PG1314.htm

Check for search info about your state at this site:

    http://adopteerights.net/nulliusfilius/?...

    Here's a search guide:

Fill out your information with the International Soundex Reunion Registry at:

    http://www.isrr.net/

    And another common reunion registry:

    http://registry.adoption.com/

Six states allow adoptees to obtain a copy of their original birth certificate.  They are: Alabama, Alaska, Delaware, Kansas, New Hampshire, Oregon.  Some states allow access with "parental consent" (yeah, even if you're a grandparent...you still need your mama's permission! LOL)

For info on your state, check this site:

    Best wishes!

ETA: you can always e-mail me for more search tips.
