  1. It's very difficult to explain how to lock, or play any position for that matter when not in that position, but I can give you a few pointers I received from a current US Eagle lock on my rugby club.  In the scrum, make sure your front rows aren't too tight to start, they can get tight in the crouch, but they need to be loose at first to allow the 2nd row to get a firm spot.  Depending on which side you're on, bind tight first to your fellow lock, place your head between the hooker and prop's thighs and grab your prop's jersey between their legs (it might bind their nuts, but it won't decrease their leg drive).  Drop your inside knee to just above the ground until ready and have your outside ready to drive.  Your legs should be behind your body so you don't move your feet, and simply lock out your legs, being sure to have equal pressure on both thighs of your front rows, just below their butts.  In mauls, it takes a little more effort, just be conscious of when you aren't getting any drive so you can recycle.  Best of luck.
