Question:

Does anybody have information about root canal treatment and pain?

I had 1st stage of root canal today - too painful to continue and scared of dentist so i'm being referred for sedation. However, have read that the pain is there because there is infection so even if i'm sedated i will still feel pain as the anaesthetic won't work properly due to the inflammation. I've read that the infection needs to be cleared but it didn't respond to antibiotics prior to the failed treatment anyway. They have put a 'dressing' in to kill the root but i have not heard about this before and remain in a lot more pain than I started with. HELP - does anybody out there understand all this stuff?

  1. Hi,

You are right. Root canal treatment is done to bring the infection under control.

The following article will give you step-by-step explanation of the procedure :

Sometimes, if the tooth is already infected, the root canal treatment cannot be finished in one sitting. Therefore, the Endodontist (Root Canal Specialist) puts the antibacterial medication inside the tooth in the form of a "dressing". That is done to prevent the germs from multiplying, so that the infection does not flare up.

    Hope this helped :)

EDIT : No, there is no reason for you to feel increased / intense pain if you go back to get the procedure finished. Just take Ibuprofen (at least 400mg after a decent meal) to reduce any swelling that might result from the instrumentation and you're gonna be all set :)

  2. well pain can be  there at the second visit but even if its  there it will be lesser as compared to the  previous  visit as dressing would have worked and medications  are also aiding in relieving infection and pain ! Everything will be  done  under adequate anesthesia so don worry about  pain!

  3. Does root canal treatment hurt?

The treatment should be as painless as getting a cavity filled, according to the American Association of Endodontists. In fact, people usually see the dentist because they're already in severe pain. You'll be given a local anesthetic to make the area around the affected tooth as painless as possible.

Root canal treatment has become increasingly sophisticated over the past 15 years, particularly since dentists have begun using surgical operating microscopes that make it far easier to trace the paths of root canals. But if you're still concerned about pain, talk to your dentist about how much pain makes you uncomfortable. Your dentist may be able to adjust the amount of anesthesia or give you nitrous oxide to make you more comfortable.

    i hope it helps !!!
