Question:

Does anybody have whale attack statistics?

I need the statistics of whale attacks. I'm terrified of whales, by the way. I'm afraid of open water, and whales LIVE in open water. I think one will eat me. I know it's ridiculus, but it's true. And those things are SO HUGE!

  1. As far as I am aware, the approximate number is zero.

  2. Dear, If you see a whale or even a shark,  feel happy, not afraid... That`s mean you are in healthy marine waters.

By the way, if you want to give your self a chance, go to Baja California (Laguna Ojo de Liebre or San Ignacio) during the winter time in order to touch and play with gray friendly whales.

  3. You must have recently read the story of Jonah and the Whale.

Your paranoia regarding whales is unfounded, the number of whale attacks in recorded history can probably be counted on your two hands, and of those "attacks" I would guess 9 of the 10 would be accidental or protecting their young.

You also have to realize that the biggest whales in the world eat krill, which are tiny little shrimp-like creatures.  Whales may have stuck or bitten people, but I don't think there has ever been a case of a whale actually "eating" a person.

Besides, how much time to you spend swimming in the middle of the ocean anyway?  People do much more harm to whales and sharks than they have ever done to us.  They are almost extinct now because of overhunting.

Soon you may never see a whale, you should learn more about them, they are REALLY interesting animals:

They are mammals, just like you and me,

they have live babies and feed them milk,

whales don't breath water through gills like fish but rather through lungs like us so they have to come to the surface to breath,

their blowholes are their "noses" so a whale's nose is in the middle of its back (neat huh?),

whales sing to each other and will travel many miles to join in a song,

some scientists think whalesong is a form of language and have spent their lives trying to figure out what it means.

so there is no need for you to be scared of whales, as big as they are they should be afraid of people.  People have almost hunted whales to extinction, they have done nothing to harm us.

  4. Lol I saw a diagram once: to show the size of the whale they compared it to a human and I was like THAT'S HUGE DEAR LORD.

Most things online are usually about shark attacks or about singular whale attacks (like when an orca attacked a trainer in Sea World). I'm not really sure where you can find a wholistic statistic source like that. Maybe you can try compiling a few of the individual attacks?

  5. How many times have you been in the proximity of whales and nervous that they might attack you?

There are no reports of even Killer Whales attacking humans, so I don't think you have any worries about being assaulted by a baleen plankton strainer (and if they did attack you they might gum you a bit then spit you out).  And unless you're swiming across the Indian Ocean, you don't have to worry about a Sperm Whale having a go at you.

BUT - there have been reports that some of the yachts which have sunk and left the passengers float around the ocean for a month or two were bashed in by either: a whale or a drifting container.

So you might want to look up container attack statistics.
