If you don't know what it is, it's an ancient game of strategy. If you don't know a site but know of the game do you know of a good store or site where I could buy the game?

  1. I recommend a turn-based site... Little Golem.

    http://www.littlegolem.net

  2. One is in Yahoo Games.

  3. you probz get them from www.2dplay.com or www.miniclip.com

  4. I don't play Go, but you can play online at the following sites.

    http://www.playok.com/intl/en/

    http://games.yahoo.co.jp/

    http://games.yahoo.com/board-games

The Yahoo! Japan Games site is mainly in Japanese but once you get signed up, you can probably figure it out and find some players who speak English.

The PlayOK will have more English speaking players but the number of players and level of competition might not be as strong as Yahoo!.

You can probably find more by searching online Go or something like that.

  5. There are several go sites; I found 'em by searching on technical terms from go, such as fuseki,  or by searching on names of famous players, such as Rin Kaiho.  You'll find lots.

Yahoo Games has a go hall.  I play there.  But I have to add a note of caution:  it ain't a place to play nice.

When I first went there, a couple of years ago now, the usual population of go players was around 1,000.  7/24.  About a third to a quarter of that population comprised the beginning players, and the social players.

But now, mob there has been whittled down to the nasty, the impatient, and the intense types; a couple of hundred population.  Beginners are treated very badly, so badly that they do not return.  And the population dwindles.

Nevertheless, you can learn to play there.  Play in the beginner room(s); take notes on the jerks you WILL encounter there, and do not play with those again; in the advanced room(s), watch and take notes on the play of those few friendlies who are rated slightly higher than you; etc.  I mean it:  keeping a little notebook on the others is a very useful gimmick.

Bring your very thickest hide, though.  When there is talk in the room, or at the table you're attending, it is usually dismissive, abusive, arrogant talk from very petty people, who gain their whole sense of personal worth from how they are rated as players of go.

(You might recognize this as a common 'game-player-type' if you play and are familiar with 'style' in other games.  Some people don't understand 'play' very well, even if their play is technically of high order.

On the other hand, this 'style' is hardly confined to game play; we see stylistic parallels easily enough here in Y!A, too, don't we? But expansion of this parenthesis would take my answer far beyond the scope of your question).
