  1. If you have Zovirax or Abreva, put that on it for now, though neither is the best treatment for cold sores.  If you don't have those, use anything that will keep it more comfortable - some people like Blistex or even something like a little vaseline to keep it from cracking.

There is no over-the-counter medication or home remedy that cures cold sores.  Only time will take care of that.  But there is a good prescription medication for cold sores.  It will make them go away much faster, and as a result of taking this medication you will have far fewer outbreaks of cold sores.

The absolute best treatment for cold sores is a prescription medication in pill form called Valtrex.  It was intended for genital herpes, but cold sores are caused by the same family of viruses, and Valtrex stops colds sores in their tracks.  None of the other treatments come close to the effectiveness of Valtrex, not the ointment Zovirax, and certainly not Abreva or anything else.  Ask your doctor about it to see if you would be a good candidate for this medication.  My doctor prescribed it for me for cold sores about five years ago and after taking it only a couple of times I hardly ever get a cold sore any more, and before Valtrex I was having several attacks a year.  On the rare occasions that I do get one now, it is gone almost immediately when I take the medication - in about a day.    In the meantime, here are a couple of informative links.

  2. Campho Phenic (not sure if thats the correct spelling) FAST DRYING ACTION I always keep this around. and rubbing alcohol works really well too. I dont think Abreva works as well once its started.

  3. Too late. This is a virus.  Don't use lipstick and drink with a straw. Avoid lip contact.  Get some Abreva ASAP. The stuff is a little expensive, but it works to keep the sore from getting worse. when you wash your face avoid scrubbing the cold sore area because it will make it bigger.  Always keep abreva on hand because if you apply it at the first sign of symptoms (tingling) you can avoid getting a sore or at least to a mimimum. When I was younger Abreva was only available with a prescription.  When you leave the house get to a drugstore.

  4. definitely get abreva i use it..its 12 bucks for a tiny tiny tiny tube thats almost smaller than your pinky LOL BUT it WORKS!!

  5. abreva or tea tree oil

  6. There isn't much laying around the house that will help - I found rubbing alcohol dries them out fast (but stings like crazy).

I've had cold sores all my life and I think the over the counter Abreva ointment is fantastic.  If you start putting it on from the moment you feel that tingle-itch that means "cold sore a-comin" you can keep it very tiny and it goes away quickly.

It's not cheap, but you only use a tiny amount so a tube can last a very long time.  Don't buy the pump - it pumps out way more than you need and wastes the product.
