Yesterday at midnight( well i guess it would be considered today) i saw 2 moons side by side in the sky. One of the moons was very bright while the other was very dull. It was extremely odd because when i moved my head to 1 position the duller moon disappeared. If anybody knows anything about this or if anybody else saw it i would appreciate an answer back. Thanks!

  1. Funny you should say that. I saw the same thing, but I think it was because I was looking through my window.

It's because of double glazed windows. It's two pieces of glass, one on top of the other. And it was because it was dark outside, with the moon being the only source of light in the sky.

  2. Either you were:

    1.  Looking through some sort of glass or eyepiece

    2.  Crossing your eyes

    3.  Looking through a bad pair of eyes

    4.  Looking when some other phenomenon caused it.

There is only 1 moon around the Earth.  Do you think another moon just "appeared"?

  3. yes u will see mars and the moon

  4. Looking through the glass of your window, you got a phenomenon known at internal reflections.

When light crosses a boundary between two materials with differing indices of refraction, some of that light is reflected back, while some of it is transmitted.  you can see this in action when you can see your reflection in a glass window when it is dark outside.  That reflection is called a primary reflection, because it happens on the surface of the glass closest to you.

The same process occurs at the far side of the glass, as the light would pass through into the air -- a secondary reflection.  And it can reflect again at the initial surface, and pass through the back surface to your eye, displaced a small amount.  It can actually go through this zig-zag reflective process many times, depending on the brightness of the source.

The same principle is used in your automobile rear-view mirror to reduce the intensity of the light from headlamps in cars behind you.

  5. i was takin photos of moon tonight and they showed up in my photos
