Question:

Does anybody know enough about boxing to help here?

I have boxed before and thought it was fun. However, 5 years ago I developed Dequer Thumb in my right hand (from playing the flute, not boxing. Who knew flutes were dangerous lol?)I went through 8 months of it being in a brace, regular steroid injections, and physical therapy just to get my hand to open all the way

I really want to try boxing, but I'm not sure if it would hurt my hand. Does anybody know whether boxing puts stress on the tendons running down the thumb and up the side of the arm? I want to steer clear if there is a chance it could make my hand worse.

I can't find anything on the web, and I'm looking for informed answers please!

Thanks!

  1. consult a doctor see what they say

  2. You should go back to your physical therapist just to make sure. Our hands aren't really meant to take the type of punishment that seriously training in boxing requires. I am a licensed massage therapist and train as well. At my previous gyms, many of the people there had one type of injury or another, they may push it to the side for the sake of training but it's there. So, I guess my answer would depend on how much you want to box and how far you want to go in the sport, which would tell me how much your willing to put your hands and body at risk.

  3. It Hurts Your Hands

  4. You mean DeQuervain's syndrome? Yes boxing puts stress. But before you start doing that you should do some therapeutic exercises to really strengthen the muscle first, then with proper technique you should be okay.

  5. I don't think your thumb has any danger from boxing as your thumb is not used in boxing at all. Best to consult a doctor about this.

  6. Truth be told, boxing for a serious length of time puts your hands through very serious punishment.  If flute playing caused you hand problems, I think you had better seriously consider an alternative to boxing, because you will put your hand through a great deal more stress and damage boxing than this simple answer can cover.

Yeah, boxing puts a lot of stress on your hands, and sometimes causes a great deal of problems later in life due to the punishment your hands take.

The Troll two answer's down has cloned my avatar and for some reason imitates me on this site.  They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but I don't think he does it out of any healthy motivation.  Poor soul, I guess the strain was more than he could bear, I pity such people.

  7. contrary to belief, the thumb is really the only finger that does not risk almost any injury from boxing
