  1. You don't mean James I of England (James VI of Scotland), do you?

"King James I of England (1566-1625) was a prominent early critic of tobacco. He wrote: "A custome lothsome to the Eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmfull to the Braine, daungerous to the Lungs, and in the blacke stinking fume thereof, neerest resembling the horrible Stigian smoke of the pit that is bottomelesse." He wrote that tobacco was a "filthie noveltie."

He became increasingly senile, deteriorating mentally and physically.  Finally he suffered a stroke, which left him without any control of himself, and from which he died.

  2. He lived long before tobacco was introduced to England

  3. In view of the previous answers, are you referring to John Plantagenet, a spurious claimant to the throne of England who lived from 1773 to 1812 and styled himself 'King John II'?

John Plantagenet claimed descent from the mediaevel monarchs of England. He was a prodigious smoker of tobacco and snuff user and even wrote a short tract in praise of its "many virtues". It is said he died choking on a very large plug of chewing tobacco (a novelty at that time in Europe), though from contemporary accounts of his poor state of health it has been suggested that he had cancer.

  4. The only King John of England died in 1216. Tobacco is native to the New World. Columbus came here in 1492. So the use of tobacco did not exist in the England of King John; therefore, he thought not of something he knew not of. He died suddenly; no cause was given.

  5. Tobacco wasn't used in Europe until the late 15th/early 16th century. King John ruled in the 13th Century.
