Does anybody know how to fix a washing machine?

my washing machine stopped working yesterday. it still fills up with water, but it won't spin. my guess is that it is a belt or something. before it stopped, it started squeaking really loud, and i smelled burnt rubber. if it is just a belt, is this something that is simple enough that i could fix myself? has anybody fixed their own washer before? i don't want to buy a new washer if i don't have to, and i don't want to pay a repair man to do it for me if it is simple enough for me to do myself. any suggestions are welcome! thanks!

  1. Don't let these people tell you that you can't do it yourself.  The washing machine repair man charged me $70. to show up at my door.  He lifted the top plate which is hinged to reveal the entire top of the washing machine. He lifted the basket [empty of course] and guess what was there,  a transmission and a belt.  [Keep the old belt because size is important and ask the hardware salesclerk for a V-belt] There are 5 components to a washing machine.  How hard can it be?

  2. fixing a washing machine is really not a simple job.  If you think its a belt, you have to drain all the water out of it, and then start taking it apart.  Sure enough, you'll find the motor.  You still don't know if its the belt.

To me what the problem sounds like, is something has caught the tub and is holding it while the belt is turning and burning.  It happened on my wife's new machine.  I had a 2 in s***w in my pocket and it got caught in one of the holes in the tub and kept the machine from spinning.  We caught it in time.

  3. the truth is that you cant fix it yourself. its a pain in the x*x to take apart and put back together. the parts are not easy to get. you order them and 2 weeks later you get them-maybe.

smelling burning rubber  indicates something major,,not like a switch or something small.

    Waste of money

  5. washing machines have transmissions not belts

"I dont wanna" aint gonna cut it

    call the repairman

  6. all machines are designed differently. it may have a belt and pulley. they are hard to get apart and harder to gert back together. this is why an appliance service tech costs so much.
