Does anybody know if there are non-medal events in the summer olympics?

There was at one time demonstration events in the Olympics.  These were non-medal competitions designed to showcase sports that usually the host country wanted to popularize in hopes of eventually becoming a medal competition.

For example, baseball was at one point strictly a demo event.  I believe Taekwondo was as well.  The Olympics no longer allow demo events.

No every event has a bronze(3rd) silver(2nd) and Gold (1st) medal for each event.

The race for the medal count (pun intended) doesn't give out medals to the winners.

Perhaps not strictly in the Olympics - but taking place in stadiums nearby and firm favs. with many spectators.

DANCING.    Couples from around the world compete for titles (not medals).

TOUCH CORNERS.   Very active and complicated sport.  4 comp. in 4 corners of a large area, denote 1 person who has to touch ONE person from each corner.  Can cover whole arena - very active.  

SQUARE DANCING.  As above, but has a Wild West theme.

ICE DANCING.   Fast and furious fun.

NO MEDALS, but a whole lot of fun.   One newspaper reported that spectators preferred watching these than the actual Olympics.   It also referred to some Olympic events as "watching paint dry".

These events will be featured in London 2012 stadium.
