Question:

Does anybody know of a boxer dying in the ring?

I don't mean collapsing and being carted out on a stretcher. I mean actually expiring right there in the ring.

A friend has claimed this has never happened in living memory.

  1. when i was in the philippines i heard of a filipino boxer dying in thailand when he was fighting

  2. I think the closest this has probably come to happening is the Emille Griffith Vs Benny Paret fight, im not absolutely certain if Paret was dead before he left the ring but he was definitely motionless on a stretcher. The ref let Griffith carry on pounding Paret in the corner for far too long, you could possibly say that the ref wrote Parets death certificate himself, Paret was out cold and slumped against the ropes but was still taking heavy shots and the ref didnt stop it, Paret must of taken something like 15-20 heavy shots before finally slumping to the floor. If you ever get to watch the end of this fight it will probably make you feel physically sick and it will never make you question a referee for stopping a fight ever again.

  3. Max Baer killed someone with his right hand

  4. Its very unfortunate but it has happened a number of times.  I can recall a few.

Perhaps the most well known death in the ring was that of Duk Koo Kim.  He was a Korean lightweight contender who fought Ray Boom Boom Mancini in 1982.  Both fighters were pure offensive style fighters.  There was little defense in the bout.  Mancini knocked Kim out in the 14th and Kim never regained consciousness.

It was a sad loss for boxing and a sad loss for Mancini as well because he was always a well spoken gentleman and a credit to the sport.  The loss effected him deeply as he never felt any ill feeling towards an opponent.

Also in the early 80s,  Middleweight contender Wilfred Sypion fought Willie Classen.  Classen died due to injuries during the bout.

Sugar Ray Robinson knocked out Jimmy Doyle in (1947 I think).  Robinson didnt want to fight Doyle because he dreampt, the night before, that something bad had happened to Doyle.  The commissioner convinced Ray to go ahead with the fight and Doyle died after being knocked out by Robinson in the 8th.

Ezzard Charles fought Sam Bouardi who died after injuries suffered during the bout.  Charles was so deeply effected by the death that he was never the same as a fighter.

Jimmy Garcia died during a lightweight bout in 1997.

Max Baer also fought an opponent who died shortly after the bout.

Emile Griffith fought Benny Peret, a fighter he clearly didnt like.  Before the bout, Griffith threatened to kill Peret for calling him 'g*y'.  Peret died after being stopped by Griffith.  Clearly Griffith's pre-fight threat was more from a competitive stand point and not really meant to be carried out.

There have been others but these happen to stand out in my mind at the time.  Its something I hope never to see again.

*Notice I dont say   a fighter ''killed'' another in the ring.  I dont believe any boxer intends to actually Kill another.  *

  5. the only case i know that comes close was benny paret, although he did not die completely in the ring, he was already brain dead by the time they carried him out, he had received over seventeen punches on the head in less than five seconds the trauma alone would have been enough to kill him and many people who saw the fight say that he already looked dead by the time they carried him out of the ring, i saw the fight on youtube and it was brutal griffith punched hard and repeatedly in the same spot (the temple) and by the time they stopped the fight i could see no life in paret's eyes, he just dropped slowly to the floor and looked like he had drawn his last breath, although he died physically nine days later, i think that he died that night as griffith executed him with his right hand.

    .

i just found someone that died in the ring as a result of blunt force trauma, her name was becky zerlentes and she actually died on the ring after receiving a vicious knock out punch by Heather Schmitz in the third round....so far she is the only known person to have actually died IN the ring as a result of blunt force trauma.
