  1. There isn't really a site with the info you want in A-Z format, but this site is useful http://www.whatsthiscaterpillar.co.uk/ - use the "plates" link halfway down the lefthand side for colour plates of moth and butterfly larvae

This is also a great site for butterfly larvae id http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/index.php

And this one for moth larvae id

    http://ukmoths.org.uk/

This one has some useful info about more common types of UK caterpillars http://www.uksafari.com/caterpillars.htm

The main problem that you're going to come across is that there's just so many moth larvae - there's well over 2000 moth species indigenous to the UK - a lot of their larvae are fairly nondescript.

If you have a particular larva you want identified, I would suggest that you post the picture on the UK Butterflies ID forum http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB2/vi...  or email a copy to the chap who runs UK Moths http://ukmoths.org.uk/email.php - but do bear in mind that he runs the site on his own and does so voluntarily, so he's not always able to answer all queries.

Do be aware that some of the sites mentioned by other answerers are for USA species (though they are extremely interesting and definitely worth a browse) - and I assume you're in the UK as this has been posted in the UK answers section

    I hope this helps you!
