Does anybody know the name of the woman who won contests for a living?

I remember reading this book about her and how she entered contests and won prizes such as a chance to fill up her grocery cart with free groceries, money by creating company slogans, and free cars by writing poems or soaking pineapple cans in water to soak off their labels to send them in. This all took place before the invention of sweepstakes as they turned out to be cheaper than hiring judges. By doing all this the woman was able to support her family without a steady income from a job.
