  1. Actually the first coins to be struck by the United States were half dimes although the 1792 dimes had the spelling Half Disme, that is the old English spelling for Deem which later became Dime. It is said Martha Washing tons silver was used, even if that is not true there is proof that George Washington gave Thomas Jefferson the silver. They were minted at a black smith shop, for the U.S. mint was not yet built. Even though the nickel showed up in 1866, half dimes were minted up to 1873. Half dimes are made of silver .900 and .100 copper. They were the main stay of the economy for a very long time, that is why most have wear. There are about 9 different types or varieties as well as a lot of die varieties such as large date or small date or even how many berries there are on the older ones. The 1845 half dime had a mintage of 1,755,000 (Philadelphia mint no mint mark) and the 1845-O (New Orleans mint) 230,000. The mint mark is in the wreath under the word dime if any. The 1845 is worth around $12 to $45 in circulated grades more if in real high circulated grade or in mint state. The 1845-0 $60 and up. It gets into the $400 and higher in grades of fine and above. values are about what a dealer will pay. You can say without the small 1/2 dime, things would have not gone so well in the past.
