Does anybody know what "299" means in Toronto's Subway?

Question

I am frecuent user of TTC's subway. And often I hear the code "299 x station" i.e. "299 Bloor" or "299 Kennedy". I noticed that also in some platforms there is the 299 in the tracks level. Just curious.

Its why I hate to use the subway !  So many loud-speakers and their staff screaming numbers at people !
