I am already in high school and can play the sax very well, but I would like a place that can be well trusted and very good at what they do so I can get some more pointers at playing the sax.

  1. Contact the nearest University with a Music Department.  They have professional teachers.  There charges should not be ridiculous. If you do well they can help with getting you a music scholarship later on.

  2. You need to network.  You should check out as many sax studios as you can.  You should attend sax recitals from students of these studios.  See what caliber of playing these instrumentalists are at.  Listen to sax players recitals from the universities/colleges.  Talk to the professors at those universities/colleges and see if they can recommend anyone for you, I'm sure that they would know many sax teachers, it's a small community so all the best sax players will know one another.  Knowing as many teachers and students as possible will help you figure out where you are in your playing and will help you figure out where you need to be.  Some teachers are great at technique, others are great for musicality, and a few can teach both.  The more you know the better prepared you will be to choose the best teacher for you.

  3. Hi Oscar,

I am in Houston as well.  You don't say where you go to school and that would make a difference,  as if you live in Kingwood,  you would not want to drive to Clear Lake.  But I can offer you this advice.   Call one of the Music and Arts music stores in town.   They keep a list of teachers.  If you call one of the stores that is not close to you,  you should find out which one is and contact that store.... the teachers will be from the area closest to that area.

You can call the UofH and ask the music department if there are professors who teach High School kids. If any do... expect to pay somewhere around $50.00 a lesson.

And here is another suggestion.  I just checked the All State Saxophone winners for the last few years and many of them came from Friendswood.  You might check with that high school band director to see who the teacher is...  as there have been several players to will All State from there.   I have my idea of who it is,  but should not mention the name on Answers.  But believe me,  he is one of the best teachers out there.   He was a factor for getting my daughter to All State two years in a row.

Anyway,  hope that was helpful.  I know you can find a good teacher in Houston.   Also, I have the name of a good teacher in the Houston area.  Email if you want the name and number.

Thanks for reading and good luck.
