I made an infant car seat cover using a pattern I found at the store but there isn't directions on how to make the canopy part of it for an infant car seat. I would really like to sew a canopy as well so that it matches the carseat. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  2. Its really cool that you have the skills to make that stuff yourself! However, it is completely unsafe to ever use any cover on a car seat that was not made by the car seat company specifically for that seat. Yeah - I know what you're thinking - that's a dumb rule made up by the car seat companies to make sure they get your money. Nope. There's truth in it.

Believe it or not, there's several reasons why do it yourself or aftermarket car seat covers are not safe.

1)If the holes for the harness do not fit exactly like the original, it can interfere with the way the harness works, causing it to snag in an accident or appear to fit correctly when in reality it does not.

2)there is an exact amount of padding that the car seat is tested with - some have to be tested over and over to see which amount makes it fail and what doesn't. Padding compresses in an accident, giving the harness a little more slack. So, if you too much or not enough, the harness won't fit the child the way it should in an accident and it could hurt him instead of protecting him.

3)car seat covers are treated with fire retardent coatings. I'm not a fan of chemicals, however, there's legitimate reason for it. A cover you make, or an aftermarket cover you buy from someone other than the car seat maker won't have this coating and your child could catch fire in an accident.

Pretty much, if it didn't come in the box with your car seat - you can NOT use it with it. Its not worth risking your precious child's life for a cute cover.

P.S. There are a ton of seats out there that have cute covers, just get a different seat! Graco SafeSeat in particular, comes in a variety of covers if you check online.

  3. littleangelfire81 did an excellent job of explaining! It is very unsafe to use an aftermarket seat cover.  Don't do it!
