  1. The bases aren't abandoned, they've been returned to the local community. Generally when a base is closed the Federal agencies get first bite at the property, then it goes down the line.  If no Federal, state, or local agency want the property, the branch of service generally set up lease agreements with private companies for use of the land.  Some good examples of how the local community renovated former military bases look at RTC San Diego.

  2. yes,one in sacramento,ca.MCLELAN AIRFORCE BASE

  3. Idk there's a few working ones in my city, a few more in my county, and my whole valley is buzzing with them.

  4. theres one out in the woods in my area, it was called wildwood air base. its in Nikiski, AK. it was in operation during ww2 and it closed down in the late 60's. we use now as a paint ball arena (illegally).  you have to jump go around a couple of gates to get to it. it has espectice in it.

  5. There are SEVERAL all over the USA. Especially WW2 era. I took flight lessons in Hays, Kansas which is about 5 miles away from an abandoned airfield used to train bomber crews during WW2. It is Walker Airfield. here is the wikipedia link

another is Montauk Air Force Station, on Long Island in New York. Fort Ord in California, The base of the statue of liberty was originally a fort, there are 2 abandoned islands near Staten Island new york that used to be military bases. Also on Hart Island (where they bury poor people in NYC) there is an abandoned NIKE Missile site. I believe that both Midway and Wake (large military bases in the Pacific) are both either completely abandoned or almost.

Here is a link to some REALLY cool pics of old abandoned military installations:

If you are looking for abandoned bases in your area, the best bet is to talk to some of the older people that sit around and drink coffee at the local cafe. during the world wars and cold war there were bases, camps, installations, and forts everywhere. A lot of the time they will remember watching planes take off or troops training as kids. The local airport of the town i grew up in started out as a small training field for American WW1 fliers. No one knew it until my great uncle found a picture of his dad training there.
