I am waiting to get a neurologist appointment. I have him off all meds except for melatonin 3 mg and that is only at night to help him sleep. He has central nervous system dysfunction and sensory processing disorder and he is delayed. I know I need to get him back to wiscoff center for further testing and all.he is only 5 yrs old. I am willing to do what ever it takes to get him what he needs. I tried 7 counties here but I don't agree with what they were trying to do. I also learned that they and his school don't want to put out the extra money for further testing on their part.I feel like I am running around in circles and hitting dead ends. I live in Bullitt County Ky. Thank you

  1. The school has probably completed all the testing they need to have to educate your child.  If you desire more testing, see if it can be covered by your medical insurance.

Schools are not required to do all the testing a parent would like for them to do.

However, if you care to be more specific, we might be able to provide better answers for you.

  2. I would try contacting your nearest Shriner's Hospital and asking them for help. Not to mention the work they do is free!

  3. Testing only matters so much...you name the problem then what?  The idea now is to treat the problems and make your son as normal and typical as possible, over protection (by parents or special ed) makes him a dependent adult, who will always need supervision.  We also limit testing in Oklahoma...better to put the money to sensory therapy and social training.  Labeling doesnt fix anything.  Relax and enjoy parenting your son as best you can...and try to lay off the meds, they all have side effects and will change his personality.

  4. Here's a link to KY OT info to start from KY education website.

If you request the testing in writing, I'm pretty sure they have to comply.  They might try to tell you they don't have to, but that's not really true. Check out your rights at http://www.wrightslaw.com  Do please go to this website and sign up for their newsletter as well. There is a wealth of information to be had in one place.

What were they trying to do that you didn't agree with?  Did you agree with their testing, but they didn't go far enough to get to the root of the problem?  Did you not like the goals or methods used?  You are as much a part of the IEP team as everyone else involved, and they can't proceed without your consent.  The more info we have about the situation, the better answer you'll get.

I would write a letter requesting the testing you feel your son needs. Make a copy and send it to

    Special Education  Attn:Jeanne Hettich

    Bullitt County Schools

    1040 Hwy. 44 E.

    Shepherdsville, KY 40165

Make it return receipt so that you'll know she received it, and the timeline for them to act will be started.  This is a great website for common form letters you might need.  There is one specifically for requesting testing.  http://www.aboutautismlaw.com/sample.htm...

    EDITED TO ADD:

If you don't agree with their testing results, you can request an independant evaluation at the schools expense.  The form should be in that form letter link, and you can find more information about that at Wrightslaw as well.  Sorry they're making it so hard for you to help your son!

    Good luck!
