  3. Actually - and though I hate to admit it - the new service sounds much better. The playlist is classier with more album tracks and it's much less corny. I'm in South Wales where the regional opt-out has the slogan 'where local news comes first' and indeed has a professional and frendly sounding package of local news headlines before going to London for the National bulletin . In Cardiff, Gold shares it's base with sister 'GCap' stations Red Dragon (the local variant of Capital) and XFM - all three seem to share news & travel resources and make efforts to make the output sound locally generated, though much of it is networked from London.

I well remember Captial Gold starting up in London in 1987 - first as a weekend opt-out from the main Capital service:- Dave Cash's Early Show; Tony Blackburn's Breakfast Show, Kenny Everett mid-morning; Pick Of The Pops Take 2 with the radio god that was Alan 'Fluff' Freeman; Paul Burnett (with two 't's - one with milk); Pete Young's Soul Cellar; Paul Gambaccini's Album Show. Great stuff, it seemed a real alternative to the naff '80's stuff coming out of most stations at the time. But it lost it's way, imho, and I frankly couldnt listen to it for years because it seemed to be broadcasting to the lowest common denominator - lot's of rip-off 0845 competitions, uninspired & predictable playlists and DJ's who sounded better suited to hospital radio. The new Gold Radio hasn't got the buzz of the early days, but at least  the people there now are demonstrating some faith in the intelligence of their listeners. Is that an improvement? Not 'arf!
