Seems like everyone BUYS birthday cakes. How impersonal! I know you moms are very busy, I am too. It's just something I want to do for my son. So that way every year he can pick out what kind of cake he wants & I'll make it. (It's a tradition that I'm starting. He's only 21mo now. lol)

For his first birthday. I bought a car shaped cake pan and decorated it like a race car.

  1. I'm not all that talented, but I do make my kids their own cakes for their birthdays.  However, when we have their actual party, I BUY a cake because I'm busy making the rest of the food for the party.  I don't necessarily think it's "impersonal" to buy the kid a cake from a bakery.  Not every one is talented enough to decorate a cake and lots of times kids want decorations on their cakes that are hard to find.

  2. If we spend money on a cake, it's going to be an ice cream cake... not something that we can really pull off here at home. Especially because we like getting them at a shop that exclusively serves frozen custard treats. They make the custard there in the shop so it's not something we can buy at the grocery store. So good though...

Otherwise I make cupcakes. My son seems to prefer those; he likes to put whiffle balls in the little paper baking cups and pretends he's eating cupcakes.

  3. I make my kids and my wife birthday cakes. And I'm a dude. How's that?

I've never used a mold, but have make cakes shaped like flowers, Eeyore, a grand piano, and I plan to make a centipede for my son this December.

  4. I'm not a great artist. I made cupcakes and the kids decorated them themselves. I was left missing a really good tasting cake- like with something yummy inside. I guess I have to wait until my birthday!

It's cute tradition you're starting! He'll probably make his wife do that for their kids!

  5. my mommy alway did and im proud to say that :]

  6. Although I don't have kids I come from a family of 5 brothers and sisters and I (27 y old) have been the "mom" for the 3 that comes after me who are 20, 15 and 14. Even though I am certified for baking and pastry I don't usually have the time for baking  a cake for their birthdays.

I am not against people buying a cake especially for a birthday party (not everyone has the talent or the time to organize every detail of the party and bake at the same time). But I think its a beautiful tradition that you are starting with your baby. When he is old he probably won't remember what was the shape or if it looked ugly, he will appreciate that you loved him and it will be something that will connect you deeply with your son.

  7. I do, but that's because I have to - my son is allergic to milk.

There's nothing wrong, though, with families creating traditions that are different from your family's traditions.  Before my son was born, we were in the habit of getting my stepdaughter an oreo ice cream cake.  She picked it out & she looked forward to it every year.

Traditions aren't better because of the amount of effort put into them - they are comforting because of the ritual & love displayed in them.

  8. Personally, I would rather buy the cake and save my energy for taking care of the kids. My kids love cake- they couldn't care less where it came from.

  9. My son has only had one birthday so far but I made his own personal cake to tear into and bought a sheet cake for everyone else. I really liked knowing what I was putting in it and it wasnt full of food coloring.

  10. No kids but I cook and bake all of the time;office staff loves it when I do.Very relaxing for me to create in the kitchen.

Ah,the life of a swinging bachelor: cooking, baking, and redecorating/remodeling my house:)

  11. i was making a birthday cake for my brother, and i reached into the cupboard above and spilled cinnamon all over the freshly iced cake

    ahaha

i have 5 siblings, all older and seldom here, but we all get into having birthdays, and we make the cakes

  12. I make all my kids birthday, my kids are young enough that they dont care so why should I spend extra money, except for all my kids first birthday  I buy cake with there baby picture and weight on it(my friend makes them) other then that I always make.

  13. My mum made all of mine until I was 10.

My dad's sister made her kids cakes, and she also makes cakes for several other people {she even made a special one for my 16th}.

I'm going to insist on making them for my kids... so I'd better ask my mum for more lessons!

  14. My aunts that have children do.

And plus, you CAN have special cakes made, so even if you don't make it, your child can choose exactly how they want it made. =)

  15. My mama always makes time to make mine and my sister's cake for our birthday every year from scratch.  She bakes cakes, bread, ect. lol.

Hmmm...maybe I can get her to bake me one now...cake sounds good. lol

  16. I made my son's first birthday cake! I just bought the cheap stuff (considering we were short on money that year) and maybed a layerd cake. It sort of looked like a wedding cake but was chocolate and had 3 circle layers. It had chocolate icing and little monkeys around it with a candle on top! He loved it!

  17. i do i do!

i baked my oldest a dougel (from the magic roundabout) cake last year took me 6 hours, this year she wants a fairy castle, my boy got a traffic light cake this year (only 1 bless him) he loves traffic lights.

i insist on making all cakes and other little treaty bits as i know exactly whats in it, but saying that there is also nothing wrong with buying one as there are people out there that can't bake a cake for throwing stones thro a glass house (my mum is one rock cakes not a problem... they all go that way lol)

what are you making him this year?

  18. I've made serveral cakes for my son.  I made a Barney cake, a batman cake and a castle for Harry Potter.

They were so ugly, they were funny!  The castle was the worst of the bunch, and it was the one where my son was the oldest when I made my last mom-made BD cake.

It was purple, had wavy door and window, and towers that looked like...well, not towers!

My son told me that he loved me for making the cake especially for him.  That is what made it worth it!

  19. I have always made my husbands cake.  My daughter is 7 months old, but I plan on making her a cake also.  I love to cook and bake, so every time I have a reason to, I do.  My mom always got me a icecream cake though.  Thats what I love for my bday and she found a place that makes them special for you, so I get a chocolate icecream cake with strawberries, its my fav.  I think it depends on what a person likes.  Some would rather hav a DQ icecream cake, and others like the store bought ones.
