Does anybody own a Playstation 3/Blu-ray player?

Now that HD-DVD has lost the format war by Warner backing out, and Toshiba have dropped the format. does anybody use their PS3 for blu-ray to watch movies? What's the quality of the films like on this player? This seems the cheapest way to go for a blue ray machine. Not really interested in it as a games machine, but you never know?

Thanks D

  1. I own a PS3 ever since it came out.  I see where it has been popular as a cheap and more advanced Blu-Ray player.  Blu is a top of the line technology and PS3 was smart to utilize it.  Over time as Blu-Ray players come down, people will probably cease using them as their Blu players just as they eventually did with PS2 and DVD.  But I promise you that is a long time coming because PS3 and Blu-Ray are still so fresh.  PS3 will remain the top selling Blu player throughout 2008 and probably 2009.

There's alot more advantages to owning a PS3 also other than games and movies.  PS3 boasts a huge hard drive unlike most Blu-Ray players.  You can store music on it, great for playing music on your surround sound to hear throughout your home.  You can store pictures or even home videos on it, great for viewing on your HDTV and home theater.  You can download free previews of Blu-Ray movies and current box office previews.  Easy to upload files through USB ports or many a type flash and memory cards if you opt to get the premium version.  PS3 works great with a wireless internet connection if you have one, and so you also have the ability to use the internet on your HDTV.  It also has an ethernet port if you want to hook up directly.

There are many other features as well.  It has the ability for remote play if you have PSP, this means you can watch videos and listen to music stored on your PS3 on your PSP throughout your household or even over the internet.  You can chat voice to voice with other PS3 users using Bluetooth headsets.  The PS3 can also alter your voice for privacy options.

All in all, there's not much the PS3 can't do.  Sony did a great job putting a lot of value into an entertainment hub machine.  I still think it is worth what I paid for it which is a lot more than it is today.

  2. The PS3 is actually a superior player.

When "Home Theater" magazine reviews BD players, they are always compared to the PS3 and only 1 $900 player matched the video quality of the PS3.

The cell processors inside the PS3 give it a huge engine to process the video with.

  3. PS3 is the same as any decent blu ray player, just because its a game machine, sony lose money by putting a blu ray player in to there machine when it first came out, to encourage people to think hmmm £400 for a ps3 with built in blu ray or £300-350 for a blu ray player the same quality, just like sony did with DVD. Quality on pirates of the caribbean rules quality wise

  4. I bought one on saturday and the quality is fantastic, both for the blue-ray films and the games.

  5. I have one and picture is great on my Samsung 1080p 40inch LCD..............

  6. Don't rush into it, if you don't plan to use it for a games console then wait til the players start crashing in price, in the next couple of months the players will be cheap.

BUT PS3 is a fantastic gamers console if that's what your after,
