  1. Hi there....I live in Naples, I have a car, which I need to say has never been damaged nor stolen......but it does cost alot, parking fees, trying to find parking is maddening, most of the time is spent in traffic so I reccomend or hiring a scooter or using public transport so that you can also see some of the city! Public Transport here, contrary to what people say is actually very good and you can move easily and quickly all over the city and suburbs.....now in the summer months most seaside communities also put a supplementary tax on cars which enter so its also cheaper to use public transport!!!!! Do take a car if you wish and don't believe all the 'it'll be stolen' and 'you're mad'........just remember that 99% of your time will be in traffic...

  2. I once hired a car in Italy (and when I say once I have travelled to Italy about twenty times!).  NEVER AGAIN!!

I hired the car at Naples airport and drove to Sorrento.  I was cut up by a guy on a moped who was not wearing a helmet or shoes and was talking on his mobile phone.

When I got to the hotel I parked the car up and did not drive it again until I had to return it to Naples airport.

It is also worth noting that the public cross the roads in force in Naples - they only give it a go when there are sufficient of them to overwhelm the drivers!

My advice would be walk and use trains - much better idea!

  3. There is so much in your question, that I don't know how to respond.

Where are you taking the vehicle FROM?

Why would you want to take a Vehicle to NAPLES where it will just be vandalized and trashed for the parts.

WHY don't you want to be "car less"?

I lived in Europe for about 10 years and NEVER OWNED A CAR... the public transportation is so good in Europe you don't NEED a car.. plus.. it is so EXPENSIVE to operate a car in Europe and you can almost NEVER find a parking place.

What could you possibly want to do that you need a car in Europe that you can't do with public transportation?

Have you ever been in Naples, or Italy or Europe?... Your question looks like something an American who has never been outside of America, would ask.

  4. I answered this question in your other one, but saw some of the answers that others wrote here and felt they were not fully aware of your situation.  you will absolutely need to get a car if you are living off base in Naples.  Yes, there is public transportation but it is not practical to use it if you expect to get to work on time every day that you are working.  Yes, there are restrictions on driving in Naples but the government of Naples has an arrangement with the US Government that exempts US service members serving in Naples from those restrictions.  Talk with your sponsor if you have specific questions or to someone else in your command, they can help you.

  5. I adore Naples, it is one of my favourite cities. And whatever they say about stealing etc, it is a lie, since the danger exists everywhere. However you have to be careful..

Concerning the car, i wouldnt recommend it, because there is the problem of parking, and they park even on the pavement. The traffic is enormous, and sometimes the signals in the street dont work..

Discover Naples on foot and by other means, i know Naples well, dont take car...Enjoy it, it is a great city with great people..

  6. Hello,

I have to agree with Topgalant.  You don't need a car in Naples and you will pay dearly to have one.  If you rent one, you will pay almost 3 times what you would pay for the same car in Germany.  The traffic and vandalism are so bad in Italy that it makes no sense to have a car.  You can more easily get around using the busses or train system.  It is much easier to use and a lot less expensive.  It could take as much as three times longer getting around Naples in a car as by going on the metro.  Use the public transportation and save yourself some money and a lot of heartache.  Another thing you will have to consider if you do take a car to Naples is the parking.  There is none.  It is so hard to get a spot.  I know in Rome you must have a special permit to drive in the city.  I think it is the same way with Naples.  Reconsider your plan
