Now it may seem a bit outlandish, but it seems to me that in today's tense political climate, this debacle by the Russian military could be a tipping point for much more to come.
Old cold war sentiments seem to be brewing, and many in the West don't know what to make of Putin's questionable motives in Georgia. There's pressure (especially from Georgia) for the West to move and re-establish democracy in the region after the mightier Russian army has simply overrun the Georgian military and threatens their way of life. The USA, it seems to me, won't move to create peace in the area because of seemingly good relations with Putin and the Russian government, but I wonder how Russia even views their uneasy partnership with the West.
If something large does come of this, it may not even be based in Russia. Franz Ferdinand's death in Austria led to the bloodiest battles being fought between Germany and France. Of course, that was a long time ago, and the world is vastly different, but I can't help but see similarities.
What do you make of this random act of aggression?
