  1. maybe the drain hose is plugged

  2. you didn't give much to go on.make-model etc??? is the lid switch ok?

  3. The pump is bad.

  4. One other possibility is the following.  Some washers (e.g, Kenmore/Whirlpool) recirculate the water in tub through a filter during the wash cycle and then pump the water out during the drain cycle.  There is a check  valve that prevents the water from flowing the wrong way when the cycle changes.  If this check valve fails the tub will not empty.  Long shot, but maybe worth checking.  A stopped up filter in this design will also prevent tub from draining completely.

  5. well if your washer is holding water, then your pump is bad...... now if water overflows from your drain, well , its simply clogged.... at that point a cable snake would need to be used to clear the stoppage ---

  6. You may need to replace belt on pump.

The pump could be froze up. Unplug and try turning pump by hand.

You could have a bad timer.

Lid switch may be bad or loose.
