My company's HR department is discussing it at our office because it ties up a significant portion of our bandwidth. I was wondering if this is a common occurance of if they are too rigid.

  1. Yes, our company tries to block audio and video streaming.  They claim that it uses too much bandwidth (we only have a T1) and it does if folks are streaming bandwidth hog streams and many people are doing it at the same time.  I agree with this policy because we have programs that load from the network hub and if alot of people are receiving streams and makes loading these applications and using them harder and slower.  If my company finally blocks the service I have been using for a year and a half, they wouldn't hurt my feelings.

  2. This is common.  My last three companies had similar policies.  It also cuts in on productivity, because employee's spend a lot of time browsing the Internet.

  3. yes, I think this is fairly common for the reason you were given.

if you look another job find out before you take it if they will allow you to listen to internet radio.

  4. No. But it does make sense that they would make a big deal of it. My place of work allows me to stream internet radio! If you can have some say in this discussion, I would suggest you tell them to allow you guys to have either itunes or windows media player on your computers, then you can import your own music and listen to that, rather than streaming!
