I am training my 9yr old stallion that had not been ridden before this year. I dont know any background on him. He is easy to handle and train however I am working on his manners around mares. He is getting better I just wanted to know if anyone has any tricks because I dont need him bothering other people talking to their horses if he is tied at the trailer or anything in the future at races. He is good if I am standing in ear-shot, but I will have to leave sometime. I was thinking going out on trail but riding a good distance appart from a mare.. Hard to explain, but any ideas to prepare him now for the future?

  1. You can put vicks up his nose,  just take a small amount and rub it into each nostril.  You can do this and it wont hurt him at all.  it masks the smells of the mares and you will be amazed at how well he behaves for you.  Good Luck  I barrel race too!!! Good luck with that too.  I have a blast and love it!!!!!

  2. Try going with a gelding first, then maybe a gelding and a mare, so the gelding can walk between the two of you. my stallion will ride happily next to a mare. as long as she's not in season.....

  3. An old trick I used on a stallion was to rub a little Vics Vapo rub inside his nostrils when at a show.  It helps cover the scent of any mare that is in heat so he'll be less likely to talk or scream to them.

A lady I used to know had a very well-mannered Appaloosa stallion that when she rode at home would sometimes call to the mares on her farm.  She got into the habit of carrying a dressage-type whip with a plastic grocery sack tied to the end.  Whenever he'd call to the mares, she'd snap that bag under his belly right near his testicles.  It made just enough contact to let him know it could hurt worse, but not enough that he ever became scared of it.  She told me that he was a perfect gentleman any time she showed him after a few times doing that.

  4. There is a little trick to making stallions behave around mares. Stallions always know when a mare is in heat because of smell. Get some Vicks Vapo Rub and put some around his nostrils. This way he smells the Vicks, and does not smell the scent of the mare. It's a tried and true method. My husband is a Shriner and has been in a lot of parades. I was talking to the guys with the beautiful Palomino's, and ask them the same question. All of them told me they use this method, and I have never seen one that it didn't work for.

  5. Sounds to me like he would make a nice gelding!!!!!
