Question:

Does anyone actually use Lipton Onion soup mix as a soup?

Is it good?

I use it all the time in hamburgers, to make chip dip, to roast potatoes, etc., but I realized while cooking today, it's a soup mix, and I've never made soup out of it!

  1. I've used it for pot roast. That's probably the closest to a soup I've ever come too! I even grind it up and use it as seasoning in a shaker.

  2. Lol, no, my mom makes an awesome onion soup, I'll eat that, but I only use the mix for baking and everything else. Lol, if you want to make your own mix, here's how they make it-

    Lipton's Onion Soup

    3/4 cup minced onion

    1/3 cup beef bouillon

    4 tsp. onion powder

    1/4 tsp. crushed celery seed

    1/4 tsp. sugar

    Combine all ingredients

    Store in tight fitting container

About 5 Tbls. of mix are equal to 1 1.25 oz pkg.

Use in making soup or onion dip (Mix 5 Tbls. with one

    pint of sour cream).

I find it's a lot cheaper when I make it myself, lol.

  3. The thing about onion soup mix is that so little of the flavor is based on onions. The spices, salt, garlic and everything else is what makes it great for all those other uses. But for actual soup it is pretty weak. For really good onion soup you need two things: carmelized onions, and beef or chicken stock (or some mix of the two). You can read about it at http://www.homemade-soup-recipes.com/fre...

  4. I've tried two different times over the years, and it just wasn't tasty. But I love baked french onion soup in a restaurant - and my sister also makes a great homemade onion soup!

Like you, I use the mix at least once a week as an ingredient in something!

  5. I've never used it for anything except roasted potatoes..
