Question:

Does anyone actually use and like mustard powder? ?

I was told to buy mustard powder to get a good strong mustard. When we tried it it was disgusting. Not mustardy flavoured, just really bitter. I would love to find a strong, flavoursome mustard for my partner, who craves for it. Not ordinary English mustard or Dijon mustard, they are not flavoursome enough. We have tried so many different mustards and never found one that is good enough. Any tips?

  1. I was going to suggest Dijon, and you can get different types, so look around the supermarket.

I did have some mustard powder because a recipe said you should use it, but i can't remember whether i like it or not. But i would go with a strong french mustard, many do have quite a lot of bite

  2. Some people love it and some people hate it. But i think most people hate it!

  4. I can honestly say that I have never heard of mustard powder.

  5. I hate mustard, I once had to use it in a casserole , And I ended up throwing the whole tin of powder out, have you tried Sainsbury's, they have all diff' kinds of mustard's.

  8. I hate mustard. My husband eats it on sandwiches; and the smell is awful. It is soooo strong.

  9. I use a small amount of mustard powder when I make homemade macaroni and cheese. I doesn't really make it taste like mustard, but it isn't as good if I don't use it.

  10. Have you tryed wholegrain.....it cuts the mustard in our house....

  11. Have a great recipe using mustard powder to make an old fashioned mayonnaise

Blend 2 level teaspoons dry mustard powder, salt and pepper to taste, with 1/2 cup sweet condensed milk and 3 tablespoons white vinegar and beat until smooth.

When you are making mustard allow to stand for 10-15 minutes

  12. Mustard powder is disgusting when mixed with water to make mustard.  I would use it as a flavouring if you add some to burgers, meatloaf, mince and dumplings etc it tastes good, just add a level teaspoon of the powder.

Moutarde De Meaux Pommery Mustard is supposed to be a great mustard.  You can find it here: http://www.worldsfoods.com/view.asp?prod...

  14. I use it, but not as mustard!  The powder is good for adding to things while cooking...such as a little pinch in a salad dressing, or a teaspoon in a tomato sauce.

Oh yeah, and how about trying wasabi?  Its a bit like mustard, but it really hurts your nose if you have too much...maybe that would be a good substitute for mustard?  Its green tho rather than yellow!

  15. I use it all the time to make mustard (with vinegar) or to bring out the flavour of cheese when added to white sauce. I don't know where you expect to find anything much stronger than Coleman's Mustard powder unless you go and buy some dynamite! Don't forget, it's supposed to made up with malt vinegar (NOT milk as some do) if you're using it on cold meats or cheese AND you allow it to 'mature' for an hour or two before dabbing it on your food!.
