Question:

Does anyone agree trying to be PC all the time is bad?

In a class of mine we were discussing how it is almost impossible to talk about race or any social issue.

People are so worried about saying something that might be offensive that nothing can really get said, everyone feels awkward, & the conversation ends.

I never thought about it before but now I think it's true, I get uncomfortable just saying the word 'black' because I don't want anyone to get offended.

Q1: Do you agree at all that if people could focus on the issues instead of just the words more could get accomplished to fight racism or homophobia?

  1. When I was a Communist while in university I was like that.....and it sucked. I was stressed out because I had to change my vocabulary and how I presented myself to people based on race, religion, disability and national origin.

For instance if I was going to cross the street but then a Black person was comming my direction, I would not cross the street or else he would think i crossed it because I hate Blacks or something.

If I saw a Muslim I would have to say Salam Alaikum

If I opened a door and a woman was behind me, I wouldnt hold the door for her or else I would be a sexist male chauvanist pig.

When I worked at a store I wouldnt watch the minority and homeless customers to see if they were stealing because that would be racists and descrimination against the homeless.

And you know to be honest...do all that burns you out and can infact make you racist.  I'm a Libertarian now, I left that Commie garbage

  2. I don't see why it's so hard to not offend anyone. I mean, I don't go around purposely saying racial slurs or stereotypes, thus, I never worry about offending. If you do, then you obviously know you are saying something wrong.

I always hear that same c**p about "black". It really makes me wonder where you got that from. I know more people offended by African-American (since they aren't african) than black.

    Geez, it's not rocket science

  3. Yeah you are right. I feel uncomfortable saying,Arab,Black or even Chinese, since I don't want to offend anyone, but I hear a lot of Jewish jokes. It get's me mad,but not really offended.

  4. Just don't go around saying racist words or going by stereotypes.  If you offend someone just apologizes about it since you didn't try to offend someone in the first place.  You shouldn't go around being scared of offending people.  If you think a word will offend someone then don't say it, that's all.

  5. You're right on. I remember when I was growing up that black people were called a word that starts with an "n" but it wasn't THE "n" word. I tried to type it, but Yahoo apparently doesn't allow it. I'm shocked. The word ends in "o".  And today they're called black. At that time Asians were called orientals. Things continue to change, and the best movie to explain the hypocrisy was Crash.

  6. of course -  sometimes you have to call a spade a spade!!!
