I'm Australian and considering becoming an International student at the Uni. of Calgary (it would be in about two years, as im currently in year 11).

Do you attend there, and if so, do you like it? Is it welcoming, do you know any international students, etc... anything you can think of telling me :)

  1. I used to work at the U of C.  It's a great place.   The first poster has no clue of what she speaks.

The UofC has a lot of international students.   You would feel very welcome.    Yes, housing can be an issue but if you come prepared you will most definately NOT be sleeping in a tent.

Calgary does indeed have arts and culture.  We have a lot of sports as well.  If you love the outdoors you will love it here.  There is a lot to do!

  2. i've lived in calgary for 18 yrs... and the first person has no idea what they're talking about. the campus is really nice, and pretty easy to navigate around. the student body is good, and i know a few international students. some love it here, others are just homesick lol. housing is a bit crazy but there's always res... although it's not the prettiest one lol. there's the truth and my knowledge! good luck, let me know if you need any more info!

oh and calgary is better than edmonton.... the ppl are a lot nicer

  3. I go to U of C, and really it depends on what program you want to take as to whether or not it's a good school. I did Civil Engineering and part of my BA there, and now I'm doing an MA, all of the profs I've had are great, there's a lot of good people around. International students I've known have liked the school, their main problem being the weather more than anything, but you do get used to it and being homesick. My main problem with it is the tuition's higher than some other comparable universities and as an international student you'd be paying more. You might want to check into their exchange program, that way you do most of your degree in Oz, but can spend a semester or two over here. Anything else you want to know, let me know I'd be glad to help you out!

  4. Moving to Calgary is a big decision; it's not very representative of the rest of Canada because it's so big, so right-wing, such a young, moneyed, party town.  Huge real estate boom, tons of oil money, that sort of thing.

The campus is really pretty.  I didn't go there so I don't know anything about the student body.  However, I know that U of A is more respected in a lot of fields.  (u of a = University of Alberta, in Edmonton).

I wouldn't want to move to Calgary because it's just insane there right now.  They can't get enough people to work in restaurants or stores, people living in tents because they can't afford apartments, etc.   But if you are looking for a crazy amount of nightlife, and if you're a single girl looking to party a lot (there are tons of guys there doing engineering, oil, etc.), maybe it is the place for you ....

Personally, I would suggest a different Canadian city!  Calgary is not known for its arts & culture -- just for the Stampede which is basically a big drunken rodeo, and for being close to Banff .... but there are lots of other beautiful places in the Rockies besides Banff.  Have you thought of Vancouver, Victoria, or Edmonton?

  5. wow the first person has no clue about what she's talking about. i've been living in calgary for 6 years and yes it is a party town, lots of money, things like that, but it also has a great culture, lots of diversity, tons of museums, great outdoor activities, etc.

the university of calgary is a great school. i'm not too sure about their international students or programs or anything like that. i know they accept a lot of international students. it's a beautiful campus and is a very well respected university.

the only thing i would say is to dress warm for our winters haha. it's a big difference from australia to canada, and calgary winters can be pretty cold sometimes.

not sure if this helped but i hope it did. good luck!!
