Question:

Does anyone besides me drive the speed limit of slower to conserve gas?

I have 25(it was 20 to 22) minutes of driving to my job. I was driving around 70mph and I've slowed down to between 63 and 65, but never more than 65. The difference in gas consumption is large on my car. I'm finding that it takes an extra day or two before I need to fill the tank again.

Is anyone else here doing this?

  1. Yes! For every mile per hour you drive over 50, you are pay an extra $0.01 per gallon of gas. So, if you're driving 70 mph, you're paying an extra $0.20 per gallon....sure makes you think, huh?

  2. I drive the speed limit, not slower, but I do save gas by not accelerating quickly or braking suddenly, it really does make a difference.  I heard that driving with your tank always at least half full also saves gas.

  3. yes i always do.  and have done so

  4. I haven't tracked the difference in fuel consumption, but I consciously resist the urge to speed or stomp on the gas. Every time I am tempted, I picture the signs at Exxon, and I practice a little self-control.

  5. SO THAT WAS YOU!!! jk! no don't drive slow to conserve gas....it makes other ppl frustrated....if you must though....stay out of the fast lane and PLEASSSEE make sure people can always pass you

  6. I did this during my vacation in Texas in 2005. Saved a lot on gas. Works great if you don't have a lot of traffic.  However, be aware that if you drive significantly less than what the rest of the traffic is doing (and it's busy) you become a potential cause of an accident (this from a highway patrol guy).  So, keep that in mind.

  7. i bought a geo storm its a gas saver. plus i drive slow.  so it helps i can drive like a little more than a week with a full tank.i can drive about 4 days on a half a tank so i got a gas saver.

  8. That is wonderful!  I am happy to hear someone say they have actually increased their mileage by lowering their driving speed.

I do not drive much to save on gas.  When I do I try to consolidate my trips.  I stock up on non-perishable items  to limit unnecessary trips.

I do drive within the speed limit when on the freeway.  Like I said. I  think it is great you have been rewarded for doing so too, with better gas mileage.

  9. yes, I am doing this, I am in the right land, driving slower, more drivers are doing it, in the left lane, which is not so good, and it irritates some drivers, that need to go faster. Get in the right lane if you want to slow down.

  10. yes.

  11. I also do what you do.  I commute to school on the weekdays 20min to get to my school.  Cruise control helps save a lot of gas for me.  Inflate your tires to proper psi and just take out some heavy things in your car that you don't need.  Dont accelerate hard or brake hard.  Changing your spark plugs or air filter so you can get more miles of that one gallon.

  12. Yes. I drive at most the speed limit, sometimes i drive 55 everywhere. And my wife and I just got a new car that gets great gas mileage so I've been saving a ton on gas money.*

  13. My boyfriend started putting signs in his windows to try to convince people to drive slower to save gas.  I also try to drive at or a little below the spedd limit for such reasons.

  14. WEll I've never ever been a speeder under any circumstances. but when I first started learning to  drive I was told the slower you drove the less gas you use, and like you I am totally sure of that. Been doing it for years, and if I forget by just a couple of mph my husband reminds me how much gas costs. Everyone should try it they would become believers. Good for you.

  15. Where I live here in Miami People drive crazy  they Hone there horn if there behind me but I can't go nowhere because 100 feet in front of me there a red light. Also I'm driving along good you know about 35 to 40 speed limit and some in front of me will always slow done to 2 mph just make a turn off the street which causes me to put on my brakes to slow down to his speed. But if he just look and exit and get off the busy street then slow down once he off the busy street I could saved .50 cents in gas. Because after slowing down I now have speed up again which uses a lot of gas.

There a lot of speed demons out and around here to who wast gas because they get out on the street just drive crazy and fast. Then there the people who will cut off for nothing. One Saturday I went for a drive down the street in 2 blocks for me and seen 3 accidents within 3 miles.

  16. I sure do.

And I measure my fuel economy very precisely and I have hard numbers.

At 50-55 mph, 100 miles of fuel costs me $7.00.

At 65-70 mph, 100 miles of fuel costs me $8.75.

At 75-80 mph, 100 miles of fuel costs me $10.00.

So yeah, big savings in slowing down.

It's very easy having "hard numbers" if your car has a trip odometer.  Just every time, fill the tank all the way until it clicks once, and divide the number of gallons by the miles on the 'trip.  Voila!  MPG.

Thing is you have to fill it til it clicks once, so you end up with non-round amounts like $34.17.  Oh well!  So pay with a credit card, no biggie.

  17. If Chatterus or anyone else is tight on cash with these record high gas prices, I recommend you look at this graph.

Isn't that amazing how every mph over 35 mph hurts more than a mpg!

Yes, you too can get over 50 mpg! (if you're not in an incredible hurry.  Just leave 15 min early and crank the tunes!)  Plus you can help prevent global warming and reduce dependence on foreign oil.  Good luck everyone saving gas.  Please pass this info on to others!  Good job Chatterus on recognizing this on your own and bringing attention to others during these high gas price times!

  18. I read somewhere that for eacy 5 miles over 60 mph you drive it is like spending 20 cents extra a gallon of gasoline!

Makes you want to drive at 60 or below.
