Question:

Does anyone bike to work?

I am looking to cut down on gas money and want to bike to work a few times a week. It's 5 miles each way. I'm in pretty good shape as I run 4 miles every night. How long do you think it would take to bike 5 miles at a steady pace? I won't run into many traffic lights but it is uphill for some of the way. Also, any suggestions for people who bike to work? Thanks.

  1. I would say just run to work?? If you run 4 miles every night then you can run to work!! just carry a backpack with all your stuff and change when you get there.  Either way your going to be sweaty!!

I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST! :))

  2. Well if ur goin at a steady 10miles per hour, it will take you around 30mins, but if u run 4 miles per night im sure you could make it in about 20mins, i have now started biking to work as petrol cost are ridiculas

  3. lance armstrong

  4. If i had to take a guess it`ll probably take you half an hour to 45 mins. I used to bike to work and it was 5 miles away with trafic lights and it took me an hour and i`m not in the best shape.

  5. My teachers bike to work all the time.

Then they always complain how tired they are.

  6. it should really only take 10-15 minutes depending on traffic.

I don't blame you wanting to ride your bike, but you need to be as cautious as you are when driving. Where a helmet, and invest in reflective lights. Riding a bike can be just as dangerous as driving a car, if not more so... It doesn't have airbags... and everytime you fall you hit pavement.

  7. children do.

  8. i don't work

  9. nope

  10. I bike about 2 miles in 10-15 mins in which a fair amount is uphill and crossing busy roads...but if you're in good shape and with no busy roads it shouldn't take you much longer for 5 miles.

  11. My dad sometimes bikes to work when gas prices are above a certain price.

  12. a motorcycle is a bike so yes

  13. I would approx say it would take about 35 mins. or less (one way) for you since you are in shape.

For me I wouldn't be able to bike to work. Its too far for me.

  14. I know several people who bike to work, including one that does 10 miles each way.  5 miles won't take you very long if you're in shape.  The only suggestion I have for you is make sure you have reflectors if you're riding at night, and DON'T listen to headphones while riding, because they will distract you.  Try it out and see.  It's good exercise.

  15. I rode 25 miles each way to work everyday of the year for 4 years it took me about an hour each way you should be able to do 5 miles in 15 minutes to start depending on your bike and pace.

  16. I wouldn't ride a bike to work & be all sweaty

  17. I ride 3.5 miles and it takes about 20 minutes at an average pace; this is a flat commute.  Look for clothes that don't wrinkle as you'll have to backpack them in, depending on what your work dress code is.  I wait to do my make-up until I get there.  Unfortunately, we don't have showers at my office, but I don't really sweat since it's such a short ride.....

As a side note, I ride about 3 times a week and this has really cut down on my gas consumption.  I've only used 1/4 tank in about a week and a half....

  18. Some good recommendations here.  Dont let anyone discourage you or scare you in wanting to ride your bike to work.  A 5 mile commute should take you about 30 minutes at a comfortable pace.  Just be careful and be alert at all times, its no more dangerous than driving a car statistically speaking.

If you dont have one already, get yourself the best helmet you can afford, a front light, a rear light, a nice pack or rear bike rack for your stuff (if you want to carry something).  You should also purchase some bike accessories to make your commuting life a little easier:  a water bottle, gloves to make your hands comfortable, a spare tube or patch kit, a mini air pump, and some tire levers.  An all in one tool kit for bikes works wonders when encountered with a mechanical brake down or flat.

Folks all over the world, and to a lesser degree in the US, commute to work on a bike every day.  More people on bikes means less cars and lower dependency on foreign oil.  Bike up people.

  19. I've been wanting to do it, but I haven't yet this year.

Last summer I rode  between 7.5 miles and 10 miles every day. I averaged 10 mph and my riding was both up and down hill.

Theoretically it should take me just over an hour to get to work, but I'm not sure about traffic and loose dogs. (I live in a rural area and the speed limit is 55 on the 2 lane state highways.)

I want to try riding to work on a Saturday to see how bad the hills are and to time myself.

  20. my friend does. idk how far it is for her though.

  21. I'm gonna start, just gotta get a bike. Gas prices are just getting to high and minimum wage ain't gonna cut it...

  22. It probably will take you about 25-30 minutes, maybe shorter.

May I suggest that you make a "test run" during the weekend or in the evening rather than running that night?  It will give you a better understanding of what you'll be facing.

Good luck and good for you!

  23. taking your bike to work is a great way to help the enviorment. i suggest that you ride your bike to work ASLONG as your legs are strong enough to handle it. stretch your legs and back before you ride your bike is great too and make sure to drink plenty of water. riding your bike once your done with work might get a little tiring though

  24. No.

  25. lol not really but with the prices of gas, people will start to.

  26. 5 miles I would think... maybe 30 mins max... if you have to deal with traffic or something made you take a detour for some strange reason. I live about 10 miles from work, but it's via the interstate and no way do I trust people to watch out for bikers. I applaud you and you eco-friendly commute!

  27. one of my employees bikes to work throughout the summer. he drives part of the way and then bikes from his mom's which is about 9 miles away. (he lives too far to bike the whole way.) He does it more because he enjoys it, but it will help him save some gas and money this year, for sure. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, use sunscreen and give yourself plenty of time to get where you're going. And be mindful of the traffic around you. They won't see you. Good luck.

  28. I bike to work 17.5 miles and it takes just a little over an hour.  I ride a mountain bike with slicker tires, so it's not a speedy road bike, but it doesn't take too long at all.  It used to take me a little longer when I first started, like 1 1/2 hours, but has gotten much easier and quicker!  5 miles should not take you too long at all!  I'd say 30 minutes at most, but probably less!  It saves tons of money and pollution, as well as keeping you in shape!

I'd recommend keeping a few pair of clothes at work that you bring in on the days when you drive to work.  Hopefully, you have showers at work, too, but 5 miles won't be too terrible and you can adjust your speed and intensity of riding depending!

  29. I would say less than 30 minutes depending on traffic..... YOu can easily ride 10 mph(average).....(5miles/half-hour).... with no traffic you can probably go between 15-25 and cut your time in half.

  30. I don't ride one, but I should! I am 2 lights away from work. Talk about lazy. I actually bought one for the intention of riding to work some days. But my feet didn't reach the pedals. ha ha. i put seat down the lowest it could go, but i was way too short for that bike.

  31. ya, same the environment!!!

    About 20 minutes
