Question:

Does anyone care ? (Australia's reputation)?

Recent suggestion(later discounted) in the media that there is or was a “club” of Customs officials at Mascot who targetted people for unnecessary searches.

10-20 years ago a person arrived at Mascot from Taiwan. Was so upset at Customs she was admitted to a psych ward.

So it lends some weight to any later belief about a “club”.

Whether or not there was such a "club",

wouldn’t credible government departments investigate and fix such problems instead of covering up.

Never saw any report of compo. paid to Taiwan person, so I don’t know if they received compo.(Compo. would serve as an apology but may not undo the damage).

This reflects very badly on Australia’s reputation.

  1. I care and yes, you would think the government would investigate.

I believe they would rather be out chasing more money from the taxpayers and sticking the working man than ensuring that all visitors to our country are correctly handled and treated with the respect that they and all people deserve.

It does make us look bad when the majority of australians are good people

  2. Would you rather have no border security like the US? Then you would have millions of people flooding into your country each year.

  3. I've always thought of Australia as a place with equal opportunities and not so fraught with differences on any level. Then a close friend moved to Sydney, after getting married to a fellow researcher. They live in a very expensive area, have great careers and social life, yet all I hear from her is how she witnesses bad bahaviour towards immigrants, especially Asians. Coming from a dependable person that she is, I've changed my opinion about the country. Hence your comment doesn't come as a surprise, unfortunately.
