Question:

Does anyone care about firefighters anymore?

I know after 9/11 everyone loved firefighters. "American Heroes!" But now cities are cutting funding again. Cutting benefits from pensions. Does anyone really care that firefighters are always ready or is that just lip service for when they need us? Just so you know. No matter the answer, we'll still get on the rig and be there when you need us.

  1. It isn't that they don't care. There are just so many other charity's right now that nobody has time. Actually about 3 months ago I called the firehouse and asked how many firefighters worked there. There was actually 50 in our town so I got together with a group of people and we raised 50 $10 Dunkin Donuts cards. They sometimes get forgotten but they are wonderful people to put there life on the line, but so are soldiers, police, etc. I try my best to give here and there, where I can.

EDIT: I forgot to add your are a wonderful person. If you can't afford to do something nice for the firefighters, it's great that you are reminding others to do so. Try doing that in your town. Maybe have your kids (if you have any) have a lemonade stand and donate the money to a good charity like the firefighters. Although it might not be much, the firefighters will be happy you love them

  2. the real heroes now are the people serving overseas. Most ppl view firefighters as lazy fat men that play cards all day and watch tv. Sorry to say

  3. you know what? what you guys do does take bravery, but I'm kinda tired about hearing all the hype.  They never mention flight attendants and we were the first ones to take the hit.  I don't see anywhere that offers a discount for my food, dry cleaning or anything else for that matter. There was a married couple on one the flights, the husband help train me and I remember him.  Their kids are orphans now.

I'm sorry your pensions are being cut, that really bites.  We took HUGE pay cuts, lost vacation and sick time and are flying loonger hours.  But guess what, the dumb ceo's took 8 million dollar stock bonuses !!!!

I'm glad you are still there to help protect us from harm.  god bless

  4. Yes some ppl do think about these things.   For others you are someone they hope they never need.   But of they need you they sure do want to see you fast.

I wonder if some public ed as to the fact that one is either gonna pay mopre insurance or pay for more and better fire protection might help.what do you think?    I also think that local papers and other media in many areas should do more to help pplsee what fiorefighters do which may mean the firefighters need to educate the media, invite them tomtake part in a training day or practice burn, keep the message in front of ppl.  I happen to live in a county where the local paper does well with such coverage and the county commissioner is also a volunteer fireman and was elected mainly because he is.   But next county over the only time anything is mentioned about a firefighter in that paper is some letter to the ed complaining about how it took 15 min to get the 15 miles to their house as tho the firefighters had laid out the winding mountain rds. Sorry didn't mean to steal your soapbox.  Stuff like that bugs me.     I really do think it is a continuing public education thing though,.

  5. First let me thank you.  You are our daily heros, we admire you so much.  I am with American REd Cross, we have a great relationship with the firefighters.  I get calls during the night to go out and help the victims of fires and I know a lot of the firemen personally.

I was here at the scene for 5 days when we lost the Charleston 9, June 18, 2007.  At the memorial service, firemen from all over the country came to pay respects to the fallen men.  I was so impressed with the love and support you give one another.  It was reported that the Charleston 9 was the greatest loss  of firefighters since 9/11 I was at ground zero, playing a supportive role in client services.

We love you, all of American Red Cross loves and supports our heros.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for always being there and being ready!  A big ol' Southern hug for the wonderful men that choose fire service to protect us.

  6. I think it is simply b/c everyone was so devestated by the loss of so many people to such a great tragedy.....but people are fickle....it isn't that they don't care or don't truly think what you do is great....it is just that they get caught up in their own worlds and forget about other people's needs. Everyone still thinks of you as heroes; everyone still knows you will be there.....but in the mean time, they are all struggling financially too and they have to feed their own kids and pay their own bills.....and--in all of their own stress--they have neglected to tell you just how thankful they are for what you do!!
